James Bay Project
What it is: The James Bay
region of Northern Quebec is a large area (620 km) of
taiga/boreal forest. The James Bay project involves the
use of the rivers in the area for hydroelectric power. The Quebec
government has built hydroelectric dams all throughout the James Bay
watershed, especially on both La Grande River and the Eastmain
River . La Grande Complex, all of
the hydroelectric dams collectively, produces about half of the energy that Quebec
consumes.
Problems: The project destroys the land with the diversion of river flow, the burning of forests, and the flooding of wilderness areas, and disrupts the lives of the Native American people living there.
